Today, January 19 2009, America celebrates the life and the legacy of a man named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He not only initiated the movement that African Americans across this nation can now appreciate -- setting into motion The Civil Rights Movement -- but was the founder of the ideals that Black folks have built our entire culture on. So what's so special about this man. Well, he was a non-violent man. A man who believed in justice, equality and peace on earth for all men.
He was also a man with a dream!!
Today we celebrate his dream of equality and brotherhood by remembering his legacy. Those words he spoke in the historical 'I Have A Dream' speech are being realized as we witness the Inaguration of our first African American President, Barack Obama. Many believe this is the end of the long road trodden to make Dr. King's dream a reality. Me -- well, I believe that this is just the beginning of a change we, as African Americans... as a culture...as a country so desperately need to see.
Not just to realize that an office such as The President of the United States is attainable but to let us know as a people that ALL dreams, no matter how large or small they seem, can be reached. It is especially important that our young people know and understand that dreams are still coming true -- and not just for the rich or famous. Everyday, ordinary people are reaching those dreams they thought were unreachable and that happened through support, love and education.
As we look on to these historical days ahead, let us not forget the man who initiated this change we are living out. And let us also make sure that our children know that we love them, support then and want them knowledgable of what it takes to become a dream reacher.
Let's not just watch the change this country is undertaking -- let's all BE the change as well!!
Take a moment and watch the Martin Luther King Jr Speech 'I Have A Dream' in its entirety below & ask yourself -- what are YOUR dreams and how can YOU become a dream reacher this year?
